LCS Student Wins Statewide Poetry Out Loud Contest!

Katie McTigue won the State Championship in the Poetry Out Loud Contest. She is the first student in SAIL History to make the finals, and she was simply amazing. Next up is the National Championship in Washington DC.  Katie won an all expense paid trip, and she now has a chance to win a $20,000 scholarship.  She also won $500 for the school to buy poetry books for the library. Kudos to our girl, Katie!

SAIL Scores Big at Regional Robotics Competition

SAIL High School’s Robotics club, the Octo-π-Rates placed 7th out of 63 teams at the FIRST regional  competition in Orlando, Florida on March 10, 2012 . This year’s objective was a basketball competition with other machines. The Octo-π-Rates played some great basketball- scoring balls autonomously, picking them up off the ground, and shooting goals from over 40’. Robotics students designed/CAD, programmed, welded, machined, soldered, and assembled a great machine in only 6 weeks.

Special thanks to all our sponsors: Lowes Foundation, Motorola Solutions, JC Penney, CFEF and the rest of our Fellowship. We raised $23,000 dollars this year to make all this happen. Thanks to the Mag lab for recently donating a lathe and mill that will allow us much more capability in working with materials. Also, a big hip hip hooray and pats on the back to all our students, mentors, and parents who put in the many long hours to make it all happen.

We are looking forward to next year’s competition and the months of training ahead to teach the next generation how to be on the cutting edge of Science and Technology:

  • Designing in 3D modeling to the thousandths of an inch.
  • Calculating the forces and energy required for each assembly, component, and material.
  • Measuring, machining and welding using top safety practices.
  • Marketing and fundraising to be able to make it all happen.

Our Robot

We did Great
We placed 7th of 63 teams at the Orlando Regional March 10th 2012

Wow. What a adventure. The OctoPiRates played some great basketball scoring balls autonomously, picking them off the ground, and shooting goals from over 40′ .
The end game involved balancing on bridges with other robots where we scored more points than any other robot.

We did so well I really want to thank our sponsors: Lowes Foundation, Motorola Solutions, JCPenney, CFEF and the rest of our Fellowship. We raised $23,000 dollars this year to make all this happen. We have some money left over that we are going to put into more tooling. We also were just donated a lathe and mill from the Mag Lab that will allow us much more capability in working with materials. Also a big hip hip horray and pats on the back to all our Students, Mentors, and Parents who put in the many long hours to make it all happen.

Looking forward to next year and the months of training to teach the next generation how to be on the cutting edge of Science and Technology.

SAIL High School Receives National Award for Innovation in the Arts

Tallahassee–SAIL High School is one of six schools in the United States to be chosen as the inaugural recipient of the College Board Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts. Granted to one school in each of the College Board regions, this award was established to recognize and celebrate the achievements of K-12 institutions that have implemented an arts program that promotes student learning and creativity in exemplary and innovative ways.

“SAIL High School continues on the path of excellence and high performance,” said Superintendent Jackie Pons. “This national recognition only reinforces the success of their students, parents, staff and community and I congratulate everyone on this great achievement.”
SAIL was chosen from applicants across the College Board’s Southern region, which consists of 10 states (LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, TN, KY, VA).

“The selection committee was very impressed with the diverse array of student artwork that was reflected in SAIL’s work sample and the high level of engagement and achievement that was reflected throughout. Your commitment to admitting students to SAIL regardless of their prior art experience and academic achievement, shows a commitment to access and equity that we greatly admire, and makes the high level of artistic and academic achievement even more inspiring. We are delighted to present SAIL High School with a $3,000 award to support its exemplary arts programming.”
– Nancy Rubino, Director of Office of Academic Initiatives at the College Board

Tiffany Thomas, Assistant Principal, will accept the award on behalf of SAIL at the College Board’s Regional Forum in Atlanta on February 10- 11, 2011
